Speed, solitude, a sombre mood. For Fall-Winter 2024, Solid Homme explores the narrative of a typically transient moment: the commute.

Drawing from Edward Hopper’s paintings, the muted colour palette in longing blues, deep greens and shots of red, renders the collection in subdued tones, which amplify the duality of the subject of this collection: a solo traveller with a distant goal. Agile and determined, he offers us a glimpse of the unique disposition that is the journey to work. An alienated individual in transit, part of a collective movement.

Here, motorcycle helmets and iterations thereof – seen in hoods on outerwear and carried as bags – become recognisable markers of personality for the commuter. He’s embarking on the journey, opting for a companionless means of transport, self-sufficient and independent; Bang & Olufsen headphones are always part of his uniform.

The collection proliferates on the idea of observing the ordinary and turning it into a sequence of significant real-life events, reiterating the loneliness in the lived everyday experience. Throughout, we are reminded of the dichotomy of this reality: Voluminous jackets slim into knitted leggings. Parkas, finished with utilitarian hook clasps, sit in counterpoint to biker shorts, crafted in Oxford moleskin. The iridescence of two-tone nylon, shining in green and red, opposes traditional homespun tweed in heather grey. Shades of dove, storm, salt and meadow reference the romantic melancholy of urban life, as evoked by Edward Hopper’s 20th-century work, while cycling tops, denim and Pantherella socks firmly return this season to a modern reality.

Set around a single bus stop, the Fall-Winter 2024 presentation is anchored by the Bauhaus concept of form follows function, and pushed forward by Solid Homme’s innate utilitarian character, balancing contrasts and revisiting the lightness in lonesome moments in the urban existence.
