WATERGATE CLUB TO CELEBRATE THE 2023 OPEN-AIR SEASON AT SAGE BEACH
Watergate celebrates Berlin’s open air season this year from June till September at Sage Beach with numerous events. This summer during June the focus was on partner brand-curated events featuring DJ Heartstring and the renowned London-based label Anjunadeep.
On July 15 Watergate presents producer and DJ Kollektiv Turmstrasse delivering a highly anticipated live set at the urban beach venue. The grand closing will take place on 16 September when Italian duo Agents Of Time take over the rains.
Watergate has been cooperating with Sage Berlin since 2016 – both locations are in the immediate vicinity of the river Spree. The Sage Beach’s 600 m2 outdoor area offers space for 750 guests, creating a real beach feeling in the heart of the city. With excellent gastronomy and numerous events in front of a breathtaking urban backdrop, Sage on Köpenicker Straße has always been a fixture on the Berlin scene.
Watergate opened in October 2002 at the Oberbaumbrücke in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In 2022 the club celebrated its 20th anniversary with a string of diverse and extraordinary events, an international tour and an exclusive co-op with the fashion brand Irie Daily.
In 2008, the club launched its own label Watergate Records. Initially, mix CDs and releases by DJs like Solomun, Ellen Allien, WhoMadeWho, and Jimi Jules documented the “Watergate sound”. Since then, the label has continuously developed into an artist label and has become the home base for numerous producers, all of whom have a very special relationship with the location at the Oberbaumbrücke.
Day-to-day business has always been a no-go at Watergate – every night and every day is attended to with the same care. “We are a counter-design to everything that makes up Berlin club culture,” says Uli Wombacher, one of the club’s three founders.
This counter-design is also the driving force behind the Watergate’s open airs and other events that take place away from the club. Leaving the home base on a regular basis opens up new perspectives and possibilities – not just with new sounds, but also with guests who might know the club but don’t party there regularly.
“Summer, sun, Watergate. At Sage Beach in Kreuzberg, the dream of a rave induced with holiday atmosphere in Berlin comes true. For years, we have been organising open-air events here with passion, trying to convey that holiday feeling, bringing it to an urban space. A short holiday in Berlin with your favourite DJs. And in the evening, it’s off to the club for the afterhour.”
