In a film and a series of photos, actress Nana Komatsu evolves within a set inspired by the film Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? (1966) by director and photographer William Klein, and which chronicles a young American model living in Paris played on screen by Dorothy McGowan.

The setting of the images by Inez & Vinoodh echoes the apartment belonging to the film’s heroine, where a broad collage of shots from her latest shoots is displayed: “It’s the idea of a Japanese woman in Paris, with a spirit of light-heartedness and freedom,” say the photographers. “In the way she moves in the video there is a sense of wonder, a sense of displacement and belonging.”

Nana Komatsu wears a long black and white tweed coat woven with camellias, a two-tone tweed suit with a patent bag, and a floral jumper with wide-cut trousers in washed faille embroidered with big petals, from the Fall-Winter 2023/24 Ready-to-Wear collection.

The reduced size of the room, reinforced by the wide-angle effect, adds a surreal dimension to these images, which is echoed in the rest of the film and photos. Dressed in an asymmetric tweed jacket with a large panel and embroidered black velvet shorts, or in a Bermuda shorts suit in black velvet with a camellia motif, Nana Komatsu seems to emerge, like a romantic heroine, from the ocean on the wooden horses of a merry-go-round.

The CHANEL Fall-Winter 2023/24 Ready-to-Wear show will be unveiled on Tuesday, 7th March at 2pm Paris time (CET) online.
