TEQUILA KOMOS: BRINGING LUXURY AGAVE SPIRITS TO THE NETHERLANDS
A brainchild of Amsterdam, born in Mexico, Tequila Komos enters the Netherlands.
Richard Betts, Amsterdam resident for the past 6 years, sat with his friend and future co-founder, Joe Marchese, on a rooftop at the end of a classic Amsterdam summer night, the sun just starting to sink behind the buildings. They wanted a great tequila as a nightcap, to toast their friend who just got married. At the time especially, however, they couldn’t. They realized that great tequila was hard to come by in the Netherlands, as well as much of Europe. That night, they decided to change that.
Launched in 2019, Komos has quickly become the fastest-growing luxury tequila in the US market, where agave-based liquors like tequila and mezcal are poised to overtake vodka as the most popular liquor in the US. Last year, tequila knocked whiskey down to the third-best-selling spirit. Now, Komos has built a team in the Netherlands to help introduce Komos to the market and fulfill that goal of getting great tequila to the Dutch.
The globally-inspired, category-redefining line of premium tequila includes Añejo Cristalino, Reposado Rosa, and Extra Añejo, with the new Añejo Reserva launching in Europe later this summer.
Each “expression”—what those in the know call each distinct bottle—is unique and, many agree, very smooth and delicious enough to convert even the most skeptical drinkers (read: those who had a bad experience with bad tequila when they were a teenager). They are all great neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail.
Komos Reposado Rosa is a smooth rosé tequila that is aged in luxurious French oak red wine barrels from Napa, the liquid naturally a light pink, just like a Provencal rosé, made so by red wine previously aged in the barrels.
The one-of-a-kind Komos Añejo Cristalino is aged for 12 months in French oak white wine barrels then charcoal filtered to create a unique, delicate, light, and smooth tequila with superior taste. It’s great straight, but the vanilla notes also make it particularly great in an Espresso Martini.
The new Añejo Reserva, launching in Europe later this summer, is aged in French oak barrels, bourbon barrels, and, uniquely, sherry casks, for a minimum of 12 months and is bottled in a white porcelain bottle.
Opulent and complex, Komos Extra Añejo, is aged for a minimum of 3 years in both French oak white wine barrels and American oak whiskey barrels. Each bottle is handmade porcelain, preserving the delicate color and aromas within, and stands out on any bar.
