words by Maria Mota

“A modern-day sanctuary with hotel, bar, restaurant, wellness, shop, gardens…”

The special feeling of finding a spot that warms your heart and makes you thrilled to go back, I found that in this unique, cozy place called August.

Looking for a location in either the vibrant Antwerp city center or calmer surroundings, the hotel takes place in the perfect midpoint between the two. Located at the heart of Het Groen Kwartier (the Green Quarter), a pedestrian-only luxury development on the site of a large 19th century former military hospital complex, August is close to the Zurenborg area, with its beautiful Art Nouveau and fin de siècle-style mansions, and several shops and food hotspots, while being a hotspot itself.

One of the beautiful sensibilities of this boutique hotel is that it originally was the site of an Augustinian monastery, now renovated by Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen and hotelier Mouche van Hool, with a focus on maintaining and respecting the building’s history and transforming it into a modern-day haven with unique interior design and a strong identity. The chapel has been converted into a lounge with high ceilings and eight authentic large stained-glass windows and a stunning round stained-glass window right above the bar, personally, the highlight of the hotel.

August boasts 44 rooms and suites, a bar, restaurant, wellness spa, a lush garden, and a shop carefully curated with a selection of homeware, skincare, books and more.

Being a guest or not, when in need of a relaxing break or simply pamper yourself with a relaxing treat, the wellness spa might be just the perfect spot, a synonym of serenity and ease. Choose between holistic therapies, body treatments, facials, outdoor shower and swimming pond, sauna, hammam, and more.

The atmosphere in the rooms can be described as calm and comfortable, with timeless linen details, a graceful abundance of natural light and unique characteristics in every corner. Surrounded by caring and thoughtful staff from the moment you walk in to the moment you leave the building, while at August you are constantly surrounded by a spacious yet cozy intimate feel.

“August is hospitable, warm and thoughtful. Everybody is welcome. You can relax in the gardens, visit the spa or dine in our restaurant or at The Jane. I love craftsmanship, high quality and pure materials. No plastic badges here, but a real key gives access to your room. ” — Mouche van Hool, August hotelier
