Numéro Netherlands recently had the pleasure of experiencing the luxurious offerings at SO/ Berlin Das Stue, where we indulged in their rich variation of treats and immersed ourselves in Berlin’s city vibrations, making our stay an unforgettable blend of luxury and comfort.

Nestled in the heart of Berlin, SO/ Berlin Das Stue stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural prowess. As we stepped  into the impressive hallway we got a magnificent first glimpse of the former Danish Embassy Building, crafted by the renowned architect Johann Emil Schaudt between 1938 and 1940, the hotel seamlessly blends historical charm with contemporary luxury or in other words —

“Where rich history meets modern design.”

Positioned at the edge of the Tiergarten and in proximity to the Berlin Zoo, the hotel enjoys a prime location that reflects the sophistication and elegance of its surroundings. The name “Stue,” derived from the Danish word meaning “living room,” encapsulates the essence of this boutique hotel. It offers a welcoming haven with 78 rooms and suites, boasting an expansive yet harmonious ambiance that sets it apart as one of the city’s largest luxury accommodations.

The interior of the Stue embodies the artistic vision of Spanish design icon Patricia Urquiola. Renowned for her exceptional work, including the design of the Mandarin Oriental in Barcelona, Urquiola infuses the spaces with a captivating blend of high-quality, traditional, and contemporary design elements. The result is an aesthetically stimulating journey that engages all senses, creating an invigorating atmosphere.

Berliner’s know the hotel since its first launch in December 2012, followed by a relaunch as “SO/ Berlin Das Stue” in March 2018 under the management of Accor, the hotel’s journey is a reflection of its resilience and enduring appeal. Today, guests are welcomed to experience the unique blend of history, design, and luxury that defines SO/ Berlin Das Stue. Many of the rooms boast breathtaking views of the Berlin Zoo or Tiergarten, some extending panoramic vistas through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. For those seeking an outdoor escape, select rooms feature a private terrace or balcony, providing a tranquil space to unwind. The interiors showcase a masterful play of design by Patricia Urquiola. The main color palette exudes understated elegance, complemented by playful bursts of color and carefully chosen textiles. Dark oak parquet flooring underfoot enhances the sense of warmth and luxury. Each room is equipped with modern amenities, including a rain shower, and for select accommodations, an indulgent extra-large bathtub awaits. In the historical section of the hotel, each floor exudes a distinctive charm, reflecting the building’s rich legacy. Elegant original parquet floors, French doors, and meticulously restored wooden inlays create an atmosphere that pays homage to the building’s storied past. Patricia Urquiola’s inviting and comfortable seating seamlessly integrates with the historical elements, encouraging guests to linger and explore. A remarkable three-story library awaits discovery, stocked with a diverse selection of Taschen Verlag books covering topics such as art, architecture, and creative contemporary pursuits. For those seeking a grander experience, the Stue presents the “Bel Etage” on the second floor — an exclusive collection of four interconnected suites.

Throughout the hotel and rooms we could spark a fantastic variety of art and architectural eye catchers showcasing a diverse collection that ranges from historical to delightfully designs. Parisian artist Quentin Garel’s oversized crocodile sculpture makes a bold statement as the first encounter for guests. The surrounding walls and entrance area showcase the captivating black and white photographs and portraits by artist Christian Thomas. Sculptures and paintings, strategically placed in public areas, playfully echo the hotel’s proximity to the zoo. Milan artist Benedetta Lori’s towering giraffe and gorillas in the entrance area, along with the charming leather animals by Omersa, serve as cushions, footrests, or delightful decorations, adding a touch of whimsy and creativity throughout the entire establishment.

Our highlight: The Stue Spa
A standout moment for us was the spa and wellness oasis— an exclusive wellness heaven with three massage rooms, a sauna, a gym, and a revitalizing pool. Susanne Kaufmann’s exceptional care products, notably the Organic Treats range rooted in natural beauty and ecological principles, elevated our spa experience. It provided a tranquil space where we could fully unwind, indulge in the offered treats, and round off our trip by immersing ourselves in pure relaxation.
