An ode to rave culture, with this project, I intended to create an editorial photoshoot that juxtaposes the elements of freedom within a place of confinement, while showcasing the beauty and diversity of Amsterdam’s rave scene and its ravers. Each model represents a different type of raver, which highlights the diversity of the city’s rave bubble. It is a compelling and evocative work where the storytelling is composed of energetic dance moves —blending the art of dance with narrative expression.

Who knows Amsterdam knows about the Bijlmerbajes . At least if you consider yourself a local. Famous for being one of the city’s creepiest prisons, it was built in 1978 and opened as an experimental complex without bars. The Bijlmerbajes (bajes being Dutch slang for prison) was constructed around the same time as the Bijlmermeer neighborhood, known for its high-rise residential buildings. It consisted of six towers connected by a tunnel named ‘Kalverstraat.’ Each tower operated as a separate correctional facility with different types of individuals/or functions. Throughout the years, the decline in the prison population in the Netherlands caused the building to close permanently in 2016, intending to shelter migrants. In 2018 ‘The Zaanstad Judicial Complex’ replaced Biljmer Bajes with Bajes Kwartier, a district destined for housing city residents. This transformation highlights the adaptive reuse of existing infrastructure to meet changing societal needs. This repurposing approach can positively impact communities, as it allows for revitalizing areas and resources.

In Amsterdam, the housing sector is shifting, as well as it’s nightlife. Popular clubs are closing, new ones are opening, and the rave scene is growing faster than ever. The sector is witnessing a revolution. Spaces for clubs remain scanty, and regulations are being renewed. “Night culture is very important to the city, culturally, socially, and economically,” stated Meliani (head of arts and culture) in Het Parool. However, as with every significant turning point, new ideas shall blossom. Whoever knows Amsterdam knows that the underground electronic music scene is vibrant. It’s a scene with plenty of diversity. Known for its inclusive nature and open-mindedness, it attracts people from around the globe every year and is home to many types of creatives, art collectives, platforms, radio shows, and record labels. Not bound to any limits, Amsterdam is a city that craves the new and the upcoming. Celebrates what is different and continually seeks what is innovative. Nothing to envy with Berlin, right? It’s a collaborative mindset for like-minded people, a romantic love affair without borders, race, gender, or sexual orientation. Clubs and venues share distinctive philosophies, all trying to improve their experience. A new addition to Amsterdam’s rave map is Levenslang.

Located in the southeast part of the city, just a five minute walk from Spaklerweg metro station, you find Amsterdam’s hidden gem. Levenslang (dutch for ‘lifetime’) was the boiler room of the Bijlmer Bajes. It became a brewery event space for the public but kept its original character: raw, sturdy, and somewhat mysterious. The main room comprises beer tanks, a bar, a spaceship-like DJ booth, and various staircases, where the main ones lead to the outdoor smoking area. An iconic giant garden cube is placed just above the dancefloor that lights up in different colors and moves clockwise— undoubtedly the club’s signature. The interesting fact about this space is that you, as a visitor, are vital to the beer being brewed, as sound, vibration, and light affect the beer!
