Interview by MAREK BARTEK

Nacho Penin, a Spanish model of Cuban origin, has been on a constant rise ever since he got discovered on Instagram. His Versace runway debut marked the breakthrough in his career. Regularly working with Versace, this experience also opened doors for other collaborations with clients like Valentino, Benetton or Adidas.

From runways to campaigns of major brands, it is clear you have a bright future in the fashion industry. How did it all start, how were you discovered?

I had a very good start getting scouted on Instagram. I got lucky with having my first agency in Milan. Soon enough, I had a pleasure to work with big names, which made my career blow up.

As you’ve mentioned, Instagram played a crucial role in the start of your career. How do you think social media has changed the landscape for aspiring models, and what advice would you give to those looking to use platforms like Instagram to break into the industry?

Instagram is the key to grow in this industry. It is all about standing out. Put you and your style in it, but always be sure to include some useful content for your modeling career — some photos with good styling, editorial you already did, and maybe even some sexy photos, if you feel like it.

Prior to beginning your modeling career, what was your relationship like with fashion?

Well, I never had a relationship with fashion. I was a typical guy wearing basic jeans and shirts. But it is true that the more time I am in contact with the industry, the more I learn about fashion and I enjoy creating cool outfits.

You’ve worked with brands like Versace and Louis Vuitton. How do you prepare for such high-profile shows and campaigns?

The best tip is to not think too much about it. I always try to take it easy and see it as a normal job.

Do you have a favorite memory from your modeling years that you feel like will remember forever?

I have collected a lot of beautiful memories throughout these years, but sure nothing compares to the feeling of walking for Versace for the first time. I remember the moment they said it was my turn, and my hearth start beating like a bongos.

The fashion and modeling industry is known for being dynamic and extremely competitive. How do you stay grounded and maintain a positive mindset?

This industry are definitely competitive, but the best way to deal with it is only compete with yourself.

What aspects of the modeling profession do you find most challenging, and how do you overcome these challenges?

I can see that the industry is changing all the time, so there’s a constant need to reinvent yourself.

When you are not working, how do you like to spend your free time?

This is easy, I love to exercise and then go the beach.

Before you became a model, what were your aspirations in life, and would you still like to pursue them?

I like to keep myself busy with my things I enjoy, but there is one thing I like the most, it’s cooking. Over the time, I have discovered the pleasure of teaching other people my ways in the kitchen. Nothing compares to the feeling of seeing motivated people doing things they love.

Looking ahead, are there any exciting projects you’re currently working on, or do you have any dream collaborations you’d love to be a part of in the future?

To be honest, a big dream of mine is to travel around the world. The good thing is, I’m already I able to do this with my job. So I’m definitely excited to see where it takes me next.
