Interview by MARIA MOTA

Nothing is anything without image. The endless dialogue between music and image is the core of Bolis’s unique creative vision, stating that music sounds the way it looks. He is 50% ‘Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul’ and 100% Bolis Pupul, his solo band.

“What motivates me to explore new beginnings? Hunger! Always stay hungry.”
— Bolis Pupul

Tell us, who is Bolis Pupul?

I am a full time musician, producer and DJ for some time now.

If I’m not in the studio or on stage I love to enjoy good food, which means a combinations of healthy and tasty food! Not always the easiest to find but I am patient.
When I was a student I studied arts and I do keep a sketch book with me when traveling, it eases my mind to put things on paper and I like to try out new pens or pencils. I realised I truly wanted to be a musician when I was studying arts, but I can imagine turning more towards drawing and painting when I get older.

How your visuals pair with your music is truly incredible. How relevant is image to you?

It’s very important to me. I have spend much time in how to accompany my music with visuals since my early beginnings in music. It was the main subject of my thesis which I called “Sound And Vision”. In my opinion music sounds the way it looks.

If you could go back to the beginning of your career, if you could have a conversation with your younger self, what would you say to them?

Now listen Boris, I know you love making music but be prepared that it’s a long road and there’s gonna be a lot of disappointments along the way. Stay true to yourself, listen to your inner voice and keep a few friends’ opinions you trust close.

What is next for you on a personal and professional level?

I will be releasing my solo album that is a tribute to my beloved mother who passed away and to my roots in Hong Kong.
I’m writing new music with Charlotte Adigéry which I’m really excited about. And I am releasing an album called “Spirituality” with psych rock band The Germans, to be expected end of 2023!
