DAMON BAKER CHATS WITH ETIENNE MACLAINE
What does YOUTH mean to you?
Youth to me is about freedom, having no ties or responsibilities and making the most of the cards that are currently on the table.
At such a young age you seem to know so much about yourself and your identity. Does that help you understand clearly the direction you want to take in life?
Absolutely not. As much as I am comfortable in my own skin, I’m still working out my direction in life. I just plan to keep saying yes to new experiences, because that’s what life’s all about.
What’s your passion?
Skating is my passion. But it’s more than that, it’s been my escape for as long as I can remember. It’s like an extension of myself. Who would’ve thought that frowned upon sound clacking down the road could bring so much peace.
You are a big fan and supporter of nature. Tell me something interesting about this.
It’s true, I love nature so much. I worked as a landscaper for a year, which allowed me to be one of the youngest people to be accepted into a very high levelled forestry and arboriculture course.
Here’s something interesting about nature. Did you know there are 12-times more trees on Earth than stars in the Milky Way?
Stepping into fashion industry at such a young age, what have you learned?
Stepping into fashion industry has made me realize that you can never know what to expect as each photographer has their own amazing and unique vision for each shoot and I just love being a part of that every time.
You and your mother, Jade, share a very close connection. Do you feel that your acceptance from your mother and freedom has helped you manage going into something so new so young?
Being brought up by such a strong and independent woman has made me very independent myself. The freedom and support she has given me throughout my childhood has allowed me to be comfortable in any situation at such young age, and I feel like that is essential in the fashion industry as it can be scary because it’s all so new. But I am just so excited to be a part of it.
What’s your end game?
In an ideal world, my end game would be living out in Australia or New Zealand, surrounded by nature and breathtaking views, whilst perusing my tree surgery and just enjoying what the world has to offer in the short time we have here.
