Portrait MJ Rodriguez, a young and promising star, who most people know for her role as Blanca in the hit TV series »Pose«, dreamt of being an actress since she was 7. She is a part of the largest cast of transgender stars in the world of TV. MJ knew early on in her life that she was different, not happy in her own body. Her transformation process began during her stage career, where she is also known for her various performances on Broadway.   MJ, you are one of the leading ladies in the FX's series »Pose«, a series that made history with it's cast featuring the largest number of transgender actresses. This is a series set in New York City's ballroom scene in the 80s, exploring the lives of black trans women. What were your thoughts when you were cast in one of the leading roles, as Blanca?   I was extremely apprehensive at first because I was scared as to how the audience would receive our stories. So many don't know or are not educated on our lives as women of a specific experience. When the 1st season aired and I saw the reception of the viewers, it was a complete sign of relief because there was nothing but love given and understanding. This was the best welcome for my first television role as a leading actress. I felt like I did the women, who were here before me, justice and their stories were seen and heard.   For your role in »Pose« you were described as a breakout star and your performance didn't go unnoticed by critics, who praised you. What would you describe as the thing that connects you the most to this character? And which is the most special thing about your character?   The thing that connects me with this character the most is her will to keep going and her drive to stay focused on laying a foundation and securing a legacy for her children.  She's very secure in herself and knows exactly who she is and we definitely have those things in common. The most special thing about her is her heart, I truly believe she is pure in her actions and what she positively wants to accomplish.   You were studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston and were in your freshman year when you landed your first professional role, as Angel, in an off Broadway production »Rent«. Tell us more about the development of your career.   When I was going to Berklee, I was completely in my element as an artist. I was in a  place of comfort and a place where I could truly explore myself artistically. I took all types of fundamental classes, but the most fulfilling ones were my music business class and songwriting class. These two classes gave me glimpses into how I should take complete control of who I wanna be as an artist as well as storytelling. By the time I was nearing the end of my first semester, I felt like I was inches closer to where I wanted to be. During summer break I took part in a small community production of Rent, that was held at New Jersey’s Performing Arts Center. There I met a woman named Freddie Walker Brown. We created such a Wonderful Rapport by the end of the run. After the run, I went back to school to try and finish off my first semester, but by the time finals had come, I found myself in the middle of going back and forth from Boston to NYC, auditioning for »Rent«, the off-Broadway revival. In these moments I felt like Berklee prepared me for not only Rent, but also for what was to come.    Who is the most special and important person in your life, and why?   My mother is the most special and important person in my life, simply because she keeps me grounded. She's never failed me and now I expect that kind of security from others. I know it's a high expectation, but that's what I feel I deserve when it comes to partnerships and people who I really want to consider lifelong friends.    What would be your advice to young trans people who are still trying to figure out their true identity?   My advice to younger individuals would be to never second guess who you are. If you're ever in doubt, look into the mirror and see the beauty that is starring right back at you. Also know that you are enough!   You're an advocate for your community. Why do you believe being an advocate is such an important role in trans world?   The reason why it is so important, is because people need a voice that uplifts in a positive and factual way and I feel like I, as well as many others are trying our best to be that. We need to be pillars and totem poles for the generations behind us to climb, so that they can be at the top.    What can we expect from you in the future, on your personal level and career wise from »Pose«?   I feel like there's so many things that one can expect from me in the future. The biggest one of them all is being incorporated in more mainstream TV and Film, specifically drama, comedy, romantic and action. As far as on personal level, the most important thing you should expect from me is growth. I'm a person who loves to learn and I'm a person who loves to change things for the better.   To people, who don't know and watch »Pose« yet, why would you suggest it to them? I would suggest »POSE« simply because it is a groundbreaking show that beautifully journeys through lives of individuals who are simply just trying to make a way for themselves and the people that are part of their community, and I think everyone in the world has done that. It's a show that does nothing but raise the bar for awareness, especially when it comes to HIV and AIDS. It's also a show that really digs deep into the true definition of what the human condition is. FEST opens flagship store with a cinema in Amsterdam

Lifestyle  The new FEST flagship store takes away all doubts about the purchase of your new piece of furniture. By giving free personal interior advice and the possibility to try out a sofa in a mini cinema, the interior brand from Amsterdam wants to help their consumers make the best choices. Femke Furnée (founder of FEST): “A sofa is a big purchase. You do research, you try things out… We understand that it’s a difficult decision, and that’s why we want to advise our customers in a new way, so they are sure they are making the best possible choice.” The newest FEST store, located at De Clercqstraat in Amsterdam-West, is now open.   FEST is the new kid on the block in the traditional furniture industry and is well on its way to becoming a worldwide player. Femke: “We have our own collection of high-end design furniture and home décor without the high-end price tag: affordable luxury. We are a young company, our team is in the middle of our own target group, which allows us to understand the needs of our customers. The purchase of a piece of furniture is a big and important choice, so we want to make this as easy and exciting as possible. An example of this is the mini cinema in our newest flagship store, where you can try out a sofa before buying it.”    Mini Cinema The flagship store is officially open from January 8th. You are welcome to visit the store for free interior advice by appointment or to watch a movie in the FEST cinema, where you get the chance to test any FEST sofa - upholstered in cinema-red velvet. Femke Furnée: “I started my company when I was 27. I had no experience, economical background nor start capital. I started with €3000 of savings and throughout the last seven years, I expanded FEST into a multi-billion company. We have our own design collection that’s being sold in over twenty countries, including the MoMa design store in New York and the Centre Pompidou’s museum store in Paris. We also supply the contract market, for instance, our furniture can be found in co-working space The Wing in New York, Los Angeles and London and soon also in Netflix' headquarters in Amsterdam. But I only realised that what we’re doing is really unique last year, when The Financial Times listed us as one of the fastest-growing companies in Europe. Poetry of Space The FEST flagship store is designed by S-P-A-C-E Projects, a company that also did the interior of stores like Ace & Tate and Fabienne Chapot. Femke: “We designed our first two stores ourselves with limited budgets. Until last year, we’ve grown organically, but we now have an investor on board. Because of that, we now have the tools to invest in growth, including a next-level store experience.“ So far, FEST has grown by working really hard, but also by trusting in my intuition. This intuition is one of the most important sources of inspiration for the designer of the newest store. You can see it translated into organic shapes that dominate our shop.” Pepijn Smit from S-P-A-C-E projects: “At FEST,  I strongly believe in the story of intuition. Not only why choices are made, but also how these choices are being made. I’ve tried to translate this to an interior in which everything is connected - like the words of a poem. Men From an actor to a director, Alex Pettyfer is making his dreams a reality   Alex Pettyfer, a successful British actor, writer and director, made his acting debut in 2005. His most notable roles to date include Magic Mike, I Am Number Four, In Time, just to name a few. In 2017 he made his directorial debut with the film Back Roads, which he also starred in and produced. This was just another step onto a new path in his career.     1. If you were put in a time machine and 10 years in the future, what changes would you like to see in the world? I would like to see that we come up with a better solution towards climate change and our mentality united as a whole towards saving our planet.    2. What are the 3 things you would change in the world? We are becoming addicted to an alternate reality, this futuristic world, where technology is prospering as we're becoming addicted to 7 second or 15 second clips, as we swipe  with this voyeuristic nature. I think we are losing touch with reality and creating this alternate online versions of ourselves. I would like to see a larger connection to nature and being more grounded and in touch with our world. I do think that there is something beautiful about a cyber connection, this feeling of being connected throughout the world, which is addictive, but I think everything has to have a duality and a balance.   3. As we are speaking of fashion, what trends do you see shaping the future of men's fashion? I love the era of Alain Delon and this french noir cinema wear, it is amazing and beautiful. It kind of blended into America as well with Steve McQueen. It's classic, chic, nostalgic. I admire what Hedi Slimane has done with Celine, it was really the only show at Paris fashion week that felt kind of different, it was something that really resonated with me.    4. Who, in your opinion, will be the biggest fashion icons - male and female - of the next 5 years? Why?  Hopefully Hedi, he's one of my best friends and I love him to bits. I think what he's gonna do with Celine and what he did with Saint Laurent is great. He doesn't just go into something, he doesn't just design, he reinvents, immerses himself into the culture and tells a story.   5. Singapore, Tokyo and Dubai are among the most futuristic destinations at the time and travelling trends are changing constantly. Which destination will be on the top of travelling lists in the future in your opinion? The future can be past or present, we can go to a place and kind of feel like we've gone back in time or advanced into the future. I'll tell you the most beautiful place I've been and it's not futuristic. I've visited it recently and thought it was magical. San Miguel del Monte in Mexico, it's like going back in time, there's an energy in the soil that when you're there you feel so connected, present within yourself.  From a tourist futuristic point of view and as a place that technology and the future are kind of evolving, I think it's Silicon Valley. I think San Francisco is turning into a hub of some really special and creative ideas that are gonna prosper and hopefully change the world.    6. Let's focus a little also on the past. Which is the one thing from the past you would like to see being popular again in the future? Phones without cameras, the little brick phones that you used to play snake on. That was the only game or entertainment you had. Or the Blackberry, the old school Blackberry.   7. If you could choose any of the actors/actresses you have never worked with yet, who would you choose and why? Jane Fonda. She's an icon to me. I met her once at the premiere of a film we were both in together, called "The Butler", but I would do anything to share the screen with her. Those five minutes I got to speak to her after the premiere was a highlight for me. She was so generous and took time to engage with me. That made the experience of meeting her so much more special.   8. What are your next projects and which one you're most excited about?  I have I-Land at Netflix from a genious mind Neil LaBute, which I'm really excited about and it comes out about now. It is a really cool sci-fi show and there's a lot of mystery elements, people don't really know who they are on this island, it's about self discovery. There's an omnious feel to the show, so you're discovering it as the characters are discovering it.  I also have a film called "Warning", which is also sci-fi and it's about all these stories that are interconnecting about life, love and tragedy, all set way in the future. I'm just about to start a film called "Echo Boomers", which my production company, Dark Dreams Entertainment, will produce. It's the second time I'm collaborating with Michael Shannon. We did a movie in 2016, called "Elvis & Nixon".   9. How do you look at your development as an actor from the start of your carrer up until now through different roles? As an actor or to be an actor is very therapeutic and I think that you have a lot of self discovery through each experience that you endure. For example, with Magic Mike I didn't know how to dance and didn't know anything about that world and I think that with each experience that you take on there's an element of learning and absorbing the information of whatever that cultural element is or whatever the background of the character is historically. I did The Butler and I learned all about American history and the history on slavery. As a human being you strive with education, we only grow through education and experience, learning about our past to help our present and future. So I think I'm a very lucky man to be in a position with the opportunites I'm given.    10. What do you envision for your life to look like in the future? I always wanted to be a director, that was always a goal. I happen to be very lucky to have become an actor and kind of learn the craft in a different way. I love story telling, I think everything has a story behind it, whether you're a part of a fashion brand or developing a story for people to relate to. I think being creative is the key to growth for me. I just finnished writing a script, but the goal is to focus on development through my production company "Dark Dreams Entertainment" and to hopefully bring film and television to the screen so people can be entertained. His most notable roles to date include Magic Mike, I Am Number Four, In Time, just to name a few. In 2017 he made his directorial debut with the film Back Roads, which he also starred in and produced. This was just another step onto a new path in his career.     1. If you were put in a time machine and 10 years in the future, what changes would you like to see in the world? I would like to see that we come up with a better solution towards climate change and our mentality united as a whole towards saving our planet.    2. What are the 3 things you would change in the world? We are becoming addicted to an alternate reality, this futuristic world, where technology is prospering as we're becoming addicted to 7 second or 15 second clips, as we swipe  with this voyeuristic nature. I think we are losing touch with reality and creating this alternate online versions of ourselves. I would like to see a larger connection to nature and being more grounded and in touch with our world. I do think that there is something beautiful about a cyber connection, this feeling of being connected throughout the world, which is addictive, but I think everything has to have a duality and a balance.   3. As we are speaking of fashion, what trends do you see shaping the future of men's fashion? I love the era of Alain Delon and this french noir cinema wear, it is amazing and beautiful. It kind of blended into America as well with Steve McQueen. It's classic, chic, nostalgic. I admire what Hedi Slimane has done with Celine, it was really the only show at Paris fashion week that felt kind of different, it was something that really resonated with me.    4. Who, in your opinion, will be the biggest fashion icons - male and female - of the next 5 years? Why?  Hopefully Hedi, he's one of my best friends and I love him to bits. I think what he's gonna do with Celine and what he did with Saint Laurent is great. He doesn't just go into something, he doesn't just design, he reinvents, immerses himself into the culture and tells a story.   5. Singapore, Tokyo and Dubai are among the most futuristic destinations at the time and travelling trends are changing constantly. Which destination will be on the top of travelling lists in the future in your opinion? The future can be past or present, we can go to a place and kind of feel like we've gone back in time or advanced into the future. I'll tell you the most beautiful place I've been and it's not futuristic. I've visited it recently and thought it was magical. San Miguel del Monte in Mexico, it's like going back in time, there's an energy in the soil that when you're there you feel so connected, present within yourself.  From a tourist futuristic point of view and as a place that technology and the future are kind of evolving, I think it's Silicon Valley. I think San Francisco is turning into a hub of some really special and creative ideas that are gonna prosper and hopefully change the world.    6. Let's focus a little also on the past. Which is the one thing from the past you would like to see being popular again in the future? Phones without cameras, the little brick phones that you used to play snake on. That was the only game or entertainment you had. Or the Blackberry, the old school Blackberry.   7. If you could choose any of the actors/actresses you have never worked with yet, who would you choose and why? Jane Fonda. She's an icon to me. I met her once at the premiere of a film we were both in together, called "The Butler", but I would do anything to share the screen with her. Those five minutes I got to speak to her after the premiere was a highlight for me. She was so generous and took time to engage with me. That made the experience of meeting her so much more special.   8. What are your next projects and which one you're most excited about?  I have I-Land at Netflix from a genious mind Neil LaBute, which I'm really excited about and it comes out about now. It is a really cool sci-fi show and there's a lot of mystery elements, people don't really know who they are on this island, it's about self discovery. There's an omnious feel to the show, so you're discovering it as the characters are discovering it.  I also have a film called "Warning", which is also sci-fi and it's about all these stories that are interconnecting about life, love and tragedy, all set way in the future. I'm just about to start a film called "Echo Boomers", which my production company, Dark Dreams Entertainment, will produce. It's the second time I'm collaborating with Michael Shannon. We did a movie in 2016, called "Elvis & Nixon".   9. How do you look at your development as an actor from the start of your carrer up until now through different roles? As an actor or to be an actor is very therapeutic and I think that you have a lot of self discovery through each experience that you endure. For example, with Magic Mike I didn't know how to dance and didn't know anything about that world and I think that with each experience that you take on there's an element of learning and absorbing the information of whatever that cultural element is or whatever the background of the character is historically. I did The Butler and I learned all about American history and the history on slavery. As a human being you strive with education, we only grow through education and experience, learning about our past to help our present and future. So I think I'm a very lucky man to be in a position with the opportunites I'm given.    10. What do you envision for your life to look like in the future? I always wanted to be a director, that was always a goal. I happen to be very lucky to have become an actor and kind of learn the craft in a different way. I love story telling, I think everything has a story behind it, whether you're a part of a fashion brand or developing a story for people to relate to. I think being creative is the key to growth for me. I just finnished writing a script, but the goal is to focus on development through my production company "Dark Dreams Entertainment" and to hopefully bring film and television to the screen so people can be entertained.
