Music What were your feelings when you wore the pink feather Valentino dress for the first time?   Even though the press and fans saw me wear the pink feather Valentino dress for the first time at the Venise Film Festival for the A Star is Born’s premiere, the truth is that the first time I wore this dresswas in my home with my mother in California. I was trying on different dresses for the premiere with my mom, listening to Andrea Bocelli. As soon as I was zipped up in the dress by my stylists Tom & Sandra, I turned to my mother and we both burst into tears. With her hands over her face crying, my mother proudly said “that’s the dress.” I’ll never forget this moment with my mother. I was thinkingabout it on the red carpet. This is the magic of Valentino.     Do you feel a special connection with the Italian fashion house as you have yourself Italian roots?   Coming from an Italian-American immigrant family, I represent this Italian fashion house with great pride and deep gratitude.     Inclusivity is a key value of Valentino, how do you advocate this shared value in your everyday life?   I believe kindness is a human right that should be afforded to all people. To experience it, to give it, to share it—but it must be equal to all and especially sensitive to those who’ve been disempoweredby their circumstances. This is how I live my life.     With his dresses Pierpaolo Piccioli invite women to celebrate their individuality, do you feel it when you wear one of his creation?   Why yes! For ‘Voce Viva,’ we made a beautiful film by Harmony Korine with a song from my new album called “Sine From Above.” I felt strong and alive, hearing myself echo through the forest as I was singing in this dress. It reminded me of my freedom and how I get to experience magic, a freedom & magic I wish everyone to have.       What gives you confidence?     I have to give confidence to myself for it to be real. I work on building it all the time. I focus on skillsI have, and work from there. I feel like it's building a house that’s never finished. I also remind myselfthat skills can be simple.     Can you remember the moment you first discovered your voice? Where was it? How old were you?   I believe you discover your voice when you discover yourself.     Who is the one voice that has inspired you the most in your personal life? In your career?   I would have to say my mother. And both my grandmothers. And my sister. In fact, I would have tosay my whole family. The hard working spirit, the “I’ll never give up” attitude, the style and grace while doing so. That’s my family’s voice. That’s me.     Would you say your voice is your strength?   I would say that my ability to love is my strength. I believe having a strong voice is essential to lovingthe world. I love the world so much. That’s why my voice is so loud. I want you to know how muchI love you.     Can you describe your voice?   My voice is learning. My voice is listening. My voice is expressing and sometimes changing. My voice belongs to me.     Do you believe that your voice can have a positive impact?   I believe most voices have the ability to positively impact, but all voices are impactful. This includes hateful voices, which is why hateful speech is so negatively powerful—why we need to fill the negative space with kind speech.       What advice would you give to those still out there looking for their own voices?   I would say looking for our own voices, to me, is an endless lifetime pursuit. We learn who we want to be, while we also unlearn things we realize we no longer believe. Our voice comes and goes. I would say cultivate your voice exactly as you please. Know it can be strong, and know it belongs to you.     Is there any particular scent that reminds you of a special moment of your life?   Fresh gravy on the stove, meatballs and pork sausage in my home growing up. They are how I live, how I love, how I prosper, and how I survive.       What is your own definition of beauty?     I believe beauty is the process we all go through— it’s how how we see ourselves. This can becomplicated, sometimes not easy, but the challenge of loving yourself is the most beautiful thing of all.     Do you have a beauty routine and secret tips to share?   I believe self-care routines, in and of themselves, are the best beauty tip of all. If you care for your mind, body, skin, heart & healing, you approach beauty holistically. For me, using makeup as well as perfume to transform how I feel at any moment is valuable as well. Is my trusty black calligraphy Eye-Lie-ner in shade “Punk.” 2. It is right now, my new Valentino ‘Voce Viva’ perfume, to feel fresh throughout the day. 4. I have to make sure I have a Le Riot Lip Gloss because it is lip conditioning and plumping withmega watt shine, comes in many shades so there’s lots to choose from. I love the color “corset.” 5. I love having a highlighter that also doubles as a liquid shimmer eye-shadow powder.     How do you get ready for a red carpet evening?   I make sure to take good care of my skin always — my mother taught me this. I do special skin treatments the night before a red carpet and the day of. Most importantly however, it’s so importantto me that everyone who is doing hair, makeup, styling and design has a beautiful day where they feel loved and we celebrate how grateful we are to do what we love as a team with my family and friends.     When do you feel the most beautiful?   Right after I meditate. It reminds me that beauty is a state of being that's undefinable because it’sfrom within.       You are committed every day in different causes, what are the causes that matter you the most?   My charity Born This Way Foundation, that I co-founded with my mother, shares our ambitiouspassion to make positive change in the face of the world’s Mental Health Crisis. I believe it is moreimportant than ever to motivate an agenda of kindness. Kindness that leads to the healing of the mind, body & soul. Kindness that invigorates programs that are fearless in their effort to help humanity learn the importance of self-care.     What is the most daring thing you did?   Whenever someone told me I wasn’t good enough throughout my career and life, I never let it breakme. I promised myself that every time I heard “no,” it would motivate me to work harder. The mostdaring thing I did was believe in myself.     What is the strongest moment you ever lived on a stage?   I remember singing in Mexico, a song from my album Born This Way called “Americano.” I was in astadium, it was pouring rain, and I sang words about the trials and tribulations of Immigration Law in my country. The audience and I were aligned —our morals, our values, our politics, our voices.     What is your personal motto?   Be Kind.     Among all your songs, which ones embodies the most your personality?   I would say my song ‘911’ off Chromatica has to be one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written. It’s a dance-pop song but the words are poetry of my deeply personal reality as someone who struggles with mental health. This song is a battle cry and celebration of my radical acceptance that this is who I am.     Tell us something no one could guess about you.   I love to cook!       With your new album, what is the message you want to spread all around the world?   On my new album Chromatica, I want everyone to know that even if life is painful sometimes, youcan still dance through it. You can dance through it because you’re being brave by fighting the painand living life. This is something that should be celebrated. Beauty Exclusive beauty editorial by Filip Koludrovic.     An experimental beauty story approached without a moodboard, but rather using the mix of the emotions and current mental states of everyone in the studio to create something without knowing the final outcome. That was the guide we were using when we met at the end of 2020. in a half abandoned factory on the suburbs of Belgrade, Serbia.    Filip Koludrovic: For this project we decided to form a dialog, a two way flow between the photographer and the model. It's extremely important what the model will bring on set with their energy. Knowing Jovana and her art the idea came to let me document that day with my camera, and after she was to document her experience through her drawings.   Jovana Krneta: Fashion supports art. My incide world speaks through my body the same way as throughout my drawings. How I see the world from a model's point of view is connected with the lens of the camera and photographer himself. Beauty We’re deeply proud to be celebrating 50 years of Molton Brown, which has inspired us to revisit our roots, and spotlight one of our iconic fragrances.     Heavenly Gingerlily is one of our earliest and most beloved collections, created in the most individual way; we’ve always believed in championing our perfumers’ unique expressions and nurturing their creativity. This bewitching, white-floral scent was a personal project of Master Perfumer Jacques Chabert – the perfumer we’ve had the longest standing friendship with over the years – making this, our 50th year, a meaningful time to pay homage to his original creation.     The idea for Heavenly Gingerlily blossomed when Jacques visited a botanical garden and discovered an exceptional type of ginger flower. Captivated by its heady, floral quality, he combined it with aquatic notes; in doing so, he put his own twist on the ‘90s marine perfumery trend. The result was a sensual fragrance veiled with warm, spicy tones and tropical wanderlust. Jacques initially named it ‘Gingerlily’, and we stayed true to his vision when we launched the collection that remains cherished to this day. We added ‘Heavenly’ because this is exactly the way the fragrance makes you feel.     I love to create fragrances that transcend trends. Heavenly Gingerlily captures that at its very essence. Its delicate yet sensuous floral signature is artfully tinged with piquant cardamom. La Bouche Rouge intends to lead the way in reinventing everyday objects, guiding women to consume dierently and think in a new manner. Without greenwashing, La Bouche Rouge chose to avoid all use of plastics, even those recycled. The first makeup routine without microplastics. La Bouche Rouge launches its complete line that reinvents the makeup ritual.     Why did you create La Bouche Rouge?   After a long career working for a large cosmetics group, I wanted to take on a project that resonated with my values. As a father of three, I wanted to show them that it was possible to build a better world: with La Bouche Rouge, I created a company that respects the planet and that avoids all use of plastic, a problem that wasn’t considered at that time. I wanted to create beautiful, desirable objects that are made to endure and accompany women allthroughout their lives. I wished to work with French artisans and artists, to create a brand that is alive, intelligent, creative, and which has a purpose and impact on the world. This, for me, is true modernity. We start a revolution with each of our daily choices. La Bouche Rouge is part of that.     For you, how does the beauty of tomorrow look?   I think that the crisis that we are currently experiencing will put an end to the consumer habits of the 20th century. Luxury should be the first sector to show the way. Luxury’s mission is to render our lives sublime. It’s therefore unthinkable for us to create objects that destroy the planet. That would be senseless! One of our cherished values is also that of a positive economy: luxury companies should have a positive social, human and environmental impact. We are committed to this through each step of our products creation. This also entails the quality ofour products, with their clean formulas and high na-turality, which are easy and pleasant to use. The future is also a world without plastic. Since 1950, only 9% of plastic waste in the world has been recycled, and around 12% is burned. The majority of it ends up in dumps, nature or the oceans. The cosmetics industry has the potential to bring about tremendous change: it’s the third most polluting industry in terms of plastic, after automobiles and fashion.That’s why we’re working towards a path of cleaner beauty. We created beauty without plastic at each step, from production to our formulas, even, for instance, with regards to our lipstick moulds and how we present our products in stores.     Why did you choose not to use recycled plastics?   Recycled plastic is the exact opposite of sustainability. It’s a material that is still poorly transformed: the majority of recycling methods still pollute and createwaste. The methods that recreate plastic that’s 100% reusable are rare. Because of its brittleness, plastic, even recycled, continues to leave microparticles. To avoid this, we have to create new desires. That’s LaBouche Rouge’s mission: to create objects so beautiful that you don’t wish to toss them, but rather, to reuse them.     How did you conceive the mascara brush in castor oil?   It entails the same method as traditional brushes: castor oil is poured into the same moulds that areused to create plastic brushes. It naturally solidies. Once solid, it can be used just as long as the mascara itself, without transferring into the formula. It’s therst of its kind in the world!       How did you choose the metal alloy that constitutes the universal case?   It’s a blend of zinc, aluminium, magnesium and copper, of which a portion is already recycled. It is highly resistant, does not get easily ruined and canbe recycled an in nite number of times. As it is heavy and precious, it is easily identified by waste sorting channels: this guarantees that it will be properly recycled, unlike other metals.     Why did you choose to use leather?   We use scraps of leather from the luxury industry. This allows us to highlight French artisanry, without producing any additional leather. Thanks to this, we maintain ties with French living heritage companies, which hold an unparalleled, traditional savoir-faire. This allows us to create artisanal, French objects that are at the fore front of fashion, which isprecisely what we all want to create today. To satisfyall our clients, we also have a vegan version. Speaking of which, all La Bouche Rouge formulas are vegan.     Why were you adamant about avoiding all microplastics in your products?   They pose a health risk: mascara and shadow particles – glitter, for instance – can fall into the eye, thereby altering the mucous membrane and causingeye diseases. Beauty Louis Vuitton perpetuates the Art of Personalization and launches its bespoke Haute Perfumery service with Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. A unique creation, conceived and made in Grasse.     It all started in Jacques Cavallier Belletrud’s creative atelier at Les Fontaines Parfumées in Grasse, the cradle of perfumery and leatherworking trades. Since 2012, this is where the Master Perfumer has conceived his most beautiful olfactive propositions for the House. Now, he is opening his workshop to bespoke perfumery, for unique and personalized creations made upon request, in the tradition of the special orders that have been rooted deeply in the Louis Vuitton DNA since 1854.     “I wanted to offer our clients the possibility of wearing a unique fragrance, made in my creative workshop,” explains Jacques Cavallier Belletrud. “To me, this bespoke Haute Perfumery service represents the essence of the House, because ultra personalization has always been at the heart of Louis Vuitton.”     The objective of this unique and privileged moment is to create the client’s olfactory portrait. Jacques Cavallier Belletrud inquires as to tastes, memories, and lifestyle as well as typical perfume habits. In the process, a genuine, intimate collaboration takes shape between client and Master Perfumer. After this exceptional and emotionally rich consultation, the Master Perfumer begins composing a scent and develops several formulas in his atelier at Les Fontaines Parfumées in Grasse. To do so, he selects from among the most exclusive raw materials he has sourced in the four corners of the globe, in order to create the fragrance trail that best corresponds to its client’s personality. Jacques Cavallier Belletrud can then calibrate each olfactory nuance down to the tiniest details to offer a resolutely made-to- measure composition.     An exceptional showcase:   It takes several months to finalize a fragrance formula. The perfume is then composed by hand at the Atelier d’Art, a new space dedicated to bespoke perfumes in the heart of Les Fontaines Parfumées. In the meantime, the trunk in which the perfume will be presented is specially crafted in Asnières, Louis Vuitton’s historic workshop and the cradle for all of its special orders. This unique and personalizable trunk holds four 100ml bottles, three 200ml bottles, a 100ml travel case, a travel spray, plus 16 refills.   A sustainable service:   As with all of the House’s perfumes, made-to-measure Haute Perfumery benefits from a refill service upon request, which is available in all Louis Vuitton stores carrying perfume fountains. Each unique formula will be forever inscribed in the Louis Vuitton archives at Les Fontaines Parfumées so that the client’s olfactory signature may be perpetuated.     Special orders: Historic savoir-faire:   Since its founding, the House has accompanied clients in their quest for rare and exceptional products and perpetuated the Art of Personalization, a tradition inscribed in the trunk-maker’s DNA since 1854. In 1859, the House opened its workshop in Asnières, just outside Paris. To this day, trunks and special orders are crafted there by highly qualified artisans for travellers the world over. The emblematic Desk-Trunk for the renowned conductor Leopold Stokowski and the Tea Service Trunk for the Maharaja of Baroda were made here. More recently, the House’s historic workshop crafted cases for transporting the world’s most prestigious sports trophies, including those for the FIFA, the French Open, and the NBA, as well as Sneaker and Vanity Trunks — contemporary versions of the cosmetic cases of the 1920s.     The special order service will be available starting in November 2020.
