On June 3rd and 4th, Amsterdam Open Air (AOA) will present a renewed version of the festival. Over the course of ten years, the immensely popular electronic music festival has always prided itself in reflecting Amsterdam nightlife and creative urban initiatives. Post-COVID, a new playground emerged with audiences that had developed different tastes, expectations and needs. It gave way for AOA to embrace new initiatives from the city, collaborations with new organizations and allow for a lineup that includes many artists who had not been featured before.

“We noticed that festival visitors need to be stimulated and surprised more than ever,” says Thomas Gurney-Champion, Creative Director of AOA. “With this in mind, we went back to the drawing board and completely reimagined AOA.”

While AOA still celebrates the greatest diversity of music cultures in Amsterdam, innovation was also found in the collaboration with exciting new creatives. For example, a new visual identity was chosen by collaborating with 3D artist Johana Kroft (NY). Based on Artificial Intelligence, Kroft created 3D art that formed the basis for AOA’s new identity.
The festival also reached out to interdisciplinary club Kanaal40, which will be hosting an area with interactive (micro)pop music videos. Other brand new partners on the festival grounds are local creative community Heesterveld, as well as techno event organizer Intercell and the underground platform Tropical Lazer Storm. AOA visitors can also listen to the live radio broadcast from Echobox or walk over to the colorful queer party presented by Supernature. The upcoming festival edition also marks the return of Foundation with its signature house and hip hop classics, rave collective Capsule, Vunzige Deuntjes and Fiesta Macumba. Palet will host the Open Air stage on Sunday.

The new approach allows AOA to present an exciting and renewed line-up. For instance, the big Open Air stage will feature a more pop-oriented program in the afternoon, with live performances by Goldband, Froukje, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, Claude and sor with string quartet. In the evening, the festival grounds will be transformed into electronic paradise with performances by Astra Club (DJ Tennis & Carlita), KILIMANJARO, Marlon Hoffstadt, DJ EZ, Philou Louzolo, Elias Mazian, Luuk van Dijk and Bella.

The other stages will cater to techno enthusiasts with Dax J, Blawan, Charlie Sparks, CLTX and Mama Snake. House lovers can indulge in exclusive back 2 back sets by Benny Rodrigues b2b Chris Stussy and Carlos Valdes b2b Steffi. Cinthie (Berlin) plays a special live set on Saturday. Headliners Enzo Siragusa and Toman promise to be grand highlights on Sunday. Minimal lovers can enjoy sets from Sonja Moonear, among others. African electronic music is represented by DBN Gogo, Buruntuma, Philou Louzolo, Cincity, among others. Last but not least, hip-hop lovers can look forward to performances by Idaly, De Schuurman, Jarreau Vandal and Vunzige Deuntjes Soundsystem.

This year we have a theater section containing a cultural program consisting of various theater performances, talks and podcast recordings.

  • Willie Wartaal – Stand-up:
After seventeen years of performing at festivals, pop halls and clubs, Wiwa dove into theater for the first time this year with ‘Moederdag’, his solo theater performance. ‘Moederdag’ is a program full of music, funny and serious stories about his life, his difficult childhood, having a drug addict mother and the life lessons he learned from it. For Amsterdam Open Air, Wiwa will perform snippets from his show, supplemented with new material. Discover the tour trailer.
  • Lifedreamers podcast recordings w/ special guests
Life Dreamers is a podcast platform created by Benjamin Conteh that provides a space for individuals to share their dreams. The goal of the platform is to inspire the younger generation of creatives by showcasing that anything is possible if you have the courage to dream big and take action to turn those dreams into reality. Over the years, Life Dreamers has featured a variety of notable guests, including Typhoon, Timor, Kees van der Spek, Edson (Patta) among others. The platform has gained recognition for its innovative approach, and Benjamin Conteh was even named talent of the year at the Young Amsterdam Talent Awards.
  • Talks by Foundation
Foundation is a dance school / hip-hop academy from South-East by John Agesilas. They host talks with guests on both days in addition to their own stage, about subjects such as: The Origins of Afrobeat & Black Roots of House.
  • Workshops:
Bachata dance workshop at the Fiesta Macumba stage
  • A collaboration with Spatial Sound Experience by End of Time (3D or 8D sound):
An entirely new way of experiencing music that can immerse the audience in a vibrant and interactive world, where discovery and connection with one another are paramount. As Thomas Gurney-Champion states, “We are striving to create the ultimate interactive playground that encourages free-minded and new connections by escaping reality.”
